History of Bo’s Coffee
Steve Benitez founded Bo’s Coffee in June 1996 in Cebu City, Philippines. The idea for the coffee shop came when Steve was a law student and frequently drank coffee to stay awake and study late at night.
In 1992, Steve took over managing his family’s barbecue restaurant business Ric’s Barbeque in Cebu after his parents wanted to shut it down. He later dropped out of law school to pursue his interest in coffee. Steve traveled to the U.S. to study the coffee industry. He was inspired by an Italian-American coffee roaster named Bo, whom he later named his coffee shop after. In 1996, Steve opened his first Bo’s Coffee kiosk in Cebu with 150,000 pesos in the capital.
Over the years, Bo’s Coffee has become the largest homegrown specialty coffee chain in the Philippines with over 100 stores nationwide and international locations in Qatar and Dubai. The company sources coffee beans locally from Philippine coffee farming regions.
Key milestones in Bo’s Coffee’s 25-year history include:
- The first store opened in Cebu in 1996
- Expanded to over 75 stores nationwide by 2015
- Launched international locations in Qatar and Dubai
